CIRCLE OF LEANDRO BASSANO
1500-29
Portrait of Cleric
Italian (1557-1622)
The man's identification as a cleric rests on his white collar, dark tunic and stern expression. His eyes are blankly staring, exuding little vivacity. In spite of his grim demeanor, which is noted in his smooth skin, undisturbed by emotionality, there are hints of informality, especially in the gray streaks in his hair and hairline receding at the temple. Leandro Bassano is the son of Jacopo Bassano, 16th-century north Italian genre painter and scion of a family of artists.
Oil on canvas, h. 23” x w. 20.25” framed, h. 15" x w. 12" canvas size
