Oil on canvas, In original frame ![]() The rugged face of the philosopher is presented dramatically in strong chiaroscuro. Bereft of decoration, the forms are bold, sculptural and naturalistic, emphasizing wrinkles and veins. The composition is set on a dynamic diagonal, reminiscent of Guercino and the Bolognese Baroque. Emerging from the shadow is his left hand, which holds the pen. His eyes are sightless as if his writing is guided by an inner vision. Perhaps he is an Evangelist composing a gospel, inspired by Caravaggio's now destroyed "St. Matthew," in which a bald, peasant type has his hand guided by an angel. ![]() H 31'' x W 27"; 18” x 14.5” canvas size |
